Thrombosis associated with air travel occurs most often 1-2 weeks after air travel. Most often it is accompanied by pain and swelling of the limb. It may happen that a blood clot or part of it passes through the heart to the pulmonary artery and the result is thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery, which is indicated by chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, fatigue and coughing cough. This condition is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
There is a higher risk of developing flight thrombosis in pregnant women, smokers, overweight people and people from the age of 40. The risk is also increased by recent surgery or trauma, cardiovascular disease, pre-existing thrombosis, the use of hormonal contraceptives, and malignant tumors.
To prevent thrombosis and mitigate risks:
- wear comfortable and rather more spacious clothes and shoes during your trip
- consume enough fluids
- get up at a time so you can stretch out and move a little
- use compression knees or stockings (pressure above the ankle 15-30 mmHg)
- injectable blood thinning and clotting anticoagulant therapy, if necessary, before the flight
