Vitamins D and K are involved in a very large number of vital processes and are extremely necessary in the first year of the baby's life.

We get vitamin K in two different ways. We get vitamin K1 from food, and vitamin K2 is produced by bacteria that live in the intestinal tract. Good sources of vitamin K are leafy vegetables, asparagus, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, peas, beans, oats.
Vitamin K is especially important in the first half of babyhood, when vitamin K cannot be obtained from food in sufficient quantities, and there are not yet enough vitamin K-producing bacteria in the intestines. Vitamin K deficiency can cause life-threatening internal hemorrhages in newborns, which is why all newborns are offered vitamin K after birth. This mostly covers the need for the first half of the year. Since breast milk contains very little vitamin K, during the first half year the baby can be additionally provided with vitamin K.
